This is a really good example of bad clicking. It shows that not only the dog but the trainer needs to be in the game. I really learned a lot watching this.... cringe... and am making the corrections in my click timing.

Cathy, you're way too hard on yourself! This isn't bad clicking. It's an example of fuzzy criteria. WHAT is it that you are marking? You WANT to be marking Rooster's paws touching the counter. Once you are very clear in your own mind exactly what your criteria is, your timing is quite good.
ReplyDeleteNOW, go back and repeat this same exercise and, after showing him the lure of your hand once or twice, let him figure it out all on his own what it is you are rewarding. WITHOUT your hand directing him. He is in the early stages of figuring out what you're "paying for". Figuring out on his own what the job is.
Remember when he "figured out" The Come Game and began turning and running to the other person ON HIS OWN? Same CONCEPT. He took the responsibility. He was thinking. He was volunteering.
